About 106 km north of Brisbane, Nambour on the
Sunshine Coast is a model of contrast. Gorgeous scenery, lush
tropical vegetation, and examples of classic rural Queensland
architecture vie for attention with blatantly commercial, and
very popular, attractions such as The Big Pineapple and the Macadamia
Nut Factory, 6 km south of the town, and The Big Cow, 6 km north.
With a comfortable blend of shopping, business, health, education,
events & entertainment, Nambour offers a laidback lifestyle
with a strong community focus. As a town, Nambour is the backbone
of the Coast, the quiet achiever, going about its business without
fanfare, slightly under-the-radar. Nambour shed its old Sugar
Town tag long ago & is now building a fresh, authentic,
vibrant township that will continue to grow & prosper, transforming
Nambour into a lifestyle location of choice, still close enough
to enjoy the Coast.
Nambour is located to the west of the Bruce Highway in a valley
just below the Blackall Range. Nambour was the original business
centre of the Sunshine Coast due to the railway line passing through
and the Sugar Cane industry .Nambour was home to the Moreton sugar
mill which provided the prosperity to the town and is now closed.
Sugar cane trains used to pass through the centre of town. Close
to Nambour are the Big Pineapple and the popular hinterland villages
of Montville and Maleny.
Nambour is the main railway connection for the Sunshine Coast
and bus connections operate to Noosa and Maroochydore on the coast.
In the centre of Nambour is Petrie Park with it's footbridges
and Quota Park with a large adventure playground.
Deriving its name from the Aboriginal word for the flowering tea-tree,
Nambours prosperity since the 1890s has been linked to sugar
cane, pineapples and assorted other semi-tropical fruits. Sugar
trains tour the local sugar mill which is open between July and
November. The spectacular Glass House Mountains and the equally
scenic Blackall Range and its chain of forest shrouded villages
are a short, comfortable drive from Nambour. Towns such as Maleny,
Montville, Flaxton and Mapleton are favourite getaways for craft
admirers and the rainforest and water-fall studded parks and picnic
areas, while Mapleton also offers glimpses of barometers and thermometers
on display at Australias only plant for manufacturing these
arcane instruments.
